It's one of the best roll fighters in the series so far. With the La-5, particularly the Series 8, you've got more weight on the wings so you need to avoid the harsher turns and focus on its speed and roll rate.

The La-5 and learning its quirks is very similar although it flies quite differently. It takes time to get a sense of when it will stall so practice some aerobatics and get to know the aircraft. Fortunately its also easily recoverable if you do and it can even be used as a defensive maneuver if performed under some degree of control. The Yak-1 is one of my all time favourites to fly and it's really quite a capable dogfighter but the stall warning is very limited before it starts to flip over on its side. Welcome aboard! IL-2 has plenty of depth to each of its aircraft so it will take a while to learn but it's very satisfying. It's just a bit frustrating that I end up lower in energy than the AI that is literally just doing a continuous turn. Even If give myself a bit of an energy advantage and spawn myself 800 meters above an f4 after a few opportunities to shoot them down it ends up the same. If I try loops or high yo yo's I can follow them for a few turns but end up too low on energy to continue doing that, turning horizontal or doing a low yo yo I just end up burning a bunch of energy and end up below them. If I just try to pull after the AI I've found I get a few opportunities to shoot at them which I miss (shit aim), but after that there not much I can do. After the first head on all the AI does it horizontal circles, but nothing I do seems to actually get me on their six, even if I give the AI a p40. I haven't played it in multiplayer yet, but even trying to fly it against the AI I am having little success. Turns out the flight model between the two games is very different, because in in this game it seems like any maneuver burns a LOT of speed. The la5 was on sale for half off a while ago, so I decided to pick it up due to the increased amount of ammo which was one of my frustrations with the yak, but also because I had a lot of fun with that plane in war thunder where It flew very similar to a 109. I mostly flew late war 109's in war thunder, and in that game if I had an advantage I could keep the opponents energy down by forcing them to evade while I kept mine up through loops and high yo yo's, but with the yak in this game it almost always felt like a competently flown 109 would eventually surpass me energy.

Overall however I wasn't doing too well, and the impression I got was that if I had the advantage, I might get a couple or so opportunities but any 109 flown somewhat competently could get separation after that. There were some skills that transferred over like defensive flying and basic maneuvering, after around 15 or so hours I was able to force overshoots on less skillfully flown 109s that tried to dogfight with me. There definitely was a bit of learning adjusting from War Thunder, in particular some things like that the plane would shake a lot to warn you of a stall which doesn't occur in this game, as well as re-learning to make the very fine movements to be able to aim (which I still suck at). Eventually I decided to get this game due to the increased realism, the bigger and in my opinion better battles, and also because once Boddenplatte will be coming out within the next year I'd be able to get that which has many late war planes that I'm more interested in.Īnyway I got Battle of Stalingrad, and started off by just flying the yak 1.
